I recall being very conscious of how I'd ignored some of the most fun videogamey things like items and equipment, so I thought I'd really make sure Kaen utilizes some. Wouldn't want him to be useless in the party just like Hel was. Van Allen's Belt ended up being kind of his signature accoutrement, the only thing he kept throughout. I don't know where he got the longer-sleeved purple shirt but eh, somewhere.
I was ALSO conscious of how it was hard enough to juggle eight main chararacters, so nine was really pushing it. Hence some nice solid black areas that don't need filling in. He says 'naw' to Riven's suggestion of the flute's utility, but I'm pretty sure he used it unmodified as a club at least a few times.
