I can't claim I didn't take the joke about identifying yourself as being from expanded universe material from Homestar Runner. I pretty much did. "The Next Epi-Snowed" had just gone online 3 months prior. Tales of Symphonia clearly left its mark on me as well, with paw-pad obsession. Shit's just cute.
Honestly the way nobody ever gets paid for standard sidequesty shit in this comic reminds me a lot of how in the Pokémon anime they left money out of the setting entirely, so everyone just goes everywhere free somehow, wins or loses nothing for battling, pays nothing to sleep in places...
