I don't remember when it was that I decided to actually bother asking what the hell Kimchi is, but this was the first hint that he might start wondering. Jeez, Soroban's hair is all over the place here. I clearly couldn't think of how it worked in 3D. Anyway I left the timeline of when and how much tech he reverse-engineered kind of vague intentionally. The lab was already pretty dang good in the old comic, including a goddamn portal he ended up installing that GOES straight to Mercury... which oddly they never end up using much. Tetsuo was in the old comic too and didn't do a lot, but he is plenty of fun. Really this whole part of the comic is just a lot of cartoons I like, mashed together.
