That semi-awkward little sandrunning creature is a thing I invented way back ago. Having now seen Records of the Illusion of Gaia, it's weird that I hadn't at the time, because they're clearly just like those kruk things you ride in that. I was just trying to make some kind of desert steed because it seemed like everyone had them, though now I can't remember any others from things I had seen at the time.
In any case, it came from a creative period that I had lost for a while, and I remember going through my boxes of old stuff to try to find the folders full of drawings. I must have at some point, because A) this thing is awkward as shit to look at (what's with the back-tuft?) and B) I wouldn't have been able to bring myself to draw it if it wasn't accurate to the old drawings. That's just how I roll.
In contrast, the sand dragon is something I did one drawing of in late 2013 and promptly forgot about entirely after drawing one in this comic a few months later. Anyway I really wanted the humor of these last panels to work, but the tail whip doesn't remotely make sense with how it hit Sasha, so whatever.
